Our PTFP Grant has been Filed!

Since Nov. 6, a group of our Hands On folks have been working on pulling together all the information needed to file a Construction grant with the Public Telecommunications Facilities Program (PTFP), an agency in the Department of Commerce. On Dec. the 17th, 24 hours before the deadline, we FedEx’ed six copies (2 and 1/2 inches of paper) to the PTFP.

The application included Letters of Support from Rep. Wallace Collins, Norman Mayor Cindy Rosenthal, Dibble Town Clerk Rama Christian and several business owners and City Council members. Pacifica sent a letter (attached) promising a full year of free programming, just to make sure we got off to a running start, once we have the station constructed. However, Prof. Clemencia Rodriguez, Marcella Fleming, Ben Kennedy and Brad Fielder are already working on the production of local programs. If you have a programming idea and the desire to do programming, email Dr. Rodriguez at: clemencia@ou.edu.

Letters of Support

Want to help with this effort? Here’s how.

Additional Letters of Support will be accepted by the PTFP until Wednesday, Dec. 24. These can be from any individual or group. If you have a business letterhead, please use it.

We would be delighted if more letters were written to the PTFP letting them know that Central Oklahoma has NO non-commercial community radio. KGOU has 6% local programming and 94% piped in programming. The Edmond station is all classical music. While many of us appreciate the national programs offered by NPR, the programs are not focused on Oklahoma’s local issues or our local groups, events and people. This fact will be an important point in our favor. And of course, we would appreciate receiving a copy of your letter for our files.

Mail the original letter of support (they want it signed in blue ink) and 5 copies to:

Attn: NUUF Construction Application – Letter of Support
Public Telecommunications Facilities Program, Room 4812
National Telecommunications and Information Administration
U.S. Department of Commerce
1401 Constitution Avenue, N.W.
Washington, DC 20230

Our address is: NUUF Radio Project

Survey of Your Programming Preferences

We have developed a short survey to find out what programming the community wants to hear. It takes less than 5 minutes to respond and we encourage you to send us your thoughts as well as a Letter of Support.

The survey is at:
http://normansustainability.org/survey/public/survey.php?name=oklahoma_radio

The survey will also by useful when applying for grants, and since we now have 432 Founders and Supporters, it should be possible to get an impressive number of responses.
Please fill it out.

White Racist Group

It’s true. If you search for “voice of reason radio”, a white racist group pops up at the top of the list. This is disheartening, to say the least. It saddens me to say it, but we will be changing our name. Voices of Oklahoma Radio is being considered. If you have another idea, send us your suggestion.

FCC Rules Against Big Media

In the good news category, the TV move from analog to digital will free up a big number of frequencies in the analog. The TV networks lobbied hard to keep the analog channels, but in a surprising ruling, the FCC said, “No.” They will be returned to the public. That’s us!

And that’s not all! There is also discussion of allowing Radio stations to have the
Channel 5 and Channel 6 space. This would open up an even larger number of areas for radio.

We will be looking at improving our signal to Norman, Moore, Chickasha, Duncan and other communities, once we get on the air.

Stay Tuned!
Mary Francis

… and anytime you want off this list, just email me: mfrancis1@earthlink.net

This NUUF Radio Project is funded in part by the Unitarian Universalist Fund for Social Responsibility and the generous support of our Founders and Volunteers.
Thank you!

This is really something to get excited about! Congratulations on all your effort. I’m hopeful about coming to hear you speak next Friday, but just in case I can’t get there, I’m looking at all this material (on the website) and I want to make sure you know I’m willing to volunteer my time in helping to get this off the ground.
I have many ideas for local programming, and could help do the shows, depending on what your needs are. Let’s talk sometime.(761-3964)…..Joe Monroe
