Call it the “domestic peace corps” – people serving others at home while learning valuable skills and contributing to the work force.

The AmeriCorps program is going strong in Oklahoma, with 455 people working this year at dozens of nonprofit organizations, schools, churches and other organizations. In the tradition of the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps workers receive minimal compensation for their efforts. But the promise of an educational award and the opportunity to make a difference in an organization continues attracting applicants across the state.
