The spirit of the Voices of Oklahoma (VOK) project is about building an institution dedicated to showcasing independent and grassroots culture. Whether music, politics, science, or silliness, VOK aspires to bring you perspectives and flavors beyond the homogenous palette of corporate info-tainment.
So it should come as no surprise that as a kindred spirit the Blue Door has graciously extended a hand of support to VOK. Independent and grassroots culture has been the Blue Door’s business for a long time now. Since 1993, the Blue Door stage has featured the cream of songwriters and string-pickers to be had, whether you heard ‘em on the radio or not.
One of the Blue Door staples over the years was Bob Childers. A musical center, so-to-speak, known to many as the “Godfather of Red Dirt Music.” In April 2008, Bob passed away. In response, the Blue Door community came out in force to honor Bob, putting on an community All-Star performance. As Blue Door proprietor Greg Johnson put it,* the place was packed; an expression of collective gratitude and love to honor a friend, and the music he gave them.
The spirit carries on July 12th at the Third Annual Tribute to Bob Childers. Admission is $20 for the benefit of the Voices of Oklahoma project.
