Western Farmers Electric Cooperative added 300 megawatts of power generation capacity in the last year and plans to add more smart generation from natural gas and wind, Gary Roulet, CEO, said on Tuesday at the 2009 Oklahoma Emerging Technology Conference in Midwest City.

“We plan to add an additional 125 megawatts of wind power by 2012,” he said.

WFEC currently receives 123 megawatts of the power it provides to its 19 member electric cooperatives from wind. The 19 members provide electric power to more than two-thirds of rural Oklahoma and parts of Kansas, Arkansas and Texas.

The latest revenue shortfall in Oklahoma is a reminder that despite recent efforts to diversify the state’s economy, its financial fortunes still rise and fall with those of the energy industry.

More than 25 years after the famed oil bust devastated the Oklahoma economy, the culprit this time is natural gas prices that have dropped well below $3 per 1,000 cubic feet — the lowest point since 2002.

Oklahoma is No. 8 in the nation for potential production of wind power.

It’s not No. 8 in production yet, but the wind power industry has come a long way since it started in 2003, a Department of Commerce official said Thursday.

“We have one of the top wind resources in the nation,” said Kylah McNabb, wind development specialist for the Oklahoma Department of Commerce and the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education in Oklahoma City. “We actually have twice the amount as Texas.”

Oklahoma ranks as the nation’s fourth most vulnerable state to oil price hikes, according to a new report by the Natural Resources Defense Council.

With $2,766.67, or 7.5 percent of the average resident’s annual income, spent on gasoline last year, the Sooner State trailed only Mississippi, Montana and South Carolina in the NRDC’s list of most-vulnerable states.
