Anxiety and anger rained on U.S. Rep. Dan Boren on Tuesday during a series of town halls around his 2nd District in eastern Oklahoma.

For most of those who lined up to speak during the two-hour meetings in McAlester, Muskogee and Pryor, health-care reform served as a focal point for more general concerns about the federal government and rising national debt.

Boren, who said he will not vote for a health-care reform measure that includes the so-called public option — federally operated health insurance similar to Medicare — was taken to task for voting for several big-ticket economic programs intended to buoy the nation’s sagging economy.

New legislation is likely to be filed to clarify a recent attorney general’s opinion that weakens a bill aimed at restricting campaign fundraising by lawmakers and legislative candidates during the legislative session, a state representative said.

Rep. David Dank said he will ask the attorney general’s office to reconsider its opinion that his bill passed into law last year does not cover contributions from political action committees to legislators or legislative candidates.

U.S. Rep. Dan Boren, who initially had scheduled no town hall meetings during the current congressional recess, announced plans Thursday to hold three next week.

Despite the high level of interest that town halls continue to generate among the public and the media, two other Oklahoma lawmakers, Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe and Rep. John Sullivan, continued to maintain schedules that currently do not include that traditional format.

Nearly 500 people attended a town hall meeting Tuesday afternoon with U.S. Rep. Tom Cole. The discussion ranged from the power of the federal government to debate on national health care reform.

The crowd cheered, booed and at times even shouted over each other, but for the most part remained civil as Cole explained for more than two hours the issues before Congress.
